In Praise of Speed Thinking

Hi Ken

Just dropping you a line giving some sense of how I have been employing Speed Thinking in a group discussion context and observations on the same.

I have found it useful at the project planning stage when thinking about a group can be conceived.  Contemplating how Speed Thinking may be used contributes to more imaginative research design.

In a discussion environment, it is enormously useful in changing pace and injecting energy.  This increases engagement, makes the sessions more fun and consequently creates more insightful and open discussion.
It also provides a ‘way in’ for a wider range of personality types. Typical discussions are, almost by definition, heavily weighted towards verbal expression. Creating permissions for people to engage differently increases useful participation and validates individual participants.

Thank you for your presentation today, it was both challenging and very enjoyable.

I always thought it was a disadvantage to ‘go with my gut’, make decisions on the run, blurt things out etc.

I can see from today’s session there is a time and place for letting the grey cells have free rein and if it helps fend off Alzheimer’s, who can’t be for that?’

Kerrie Shackleton, Manager, Property Development Group.

Ken, I wanted to formally thank you for the tremendous contribution you made to our last 2008 event at the Marketing Women’s Association on Tuesday evening.

You certainly got everyone’s attention & got them thinking, quickly, about changes that were possible in their working lives. I am certain some of your tips will make it into the real world for our attendees.

Many thanks again.
Cheryl Hayman, President, Marketing Women’s Association

‘The session was great and all who attended found it extremely valuable, we are in fact going to do a session tomorrow using the 2mins for 9 ideas format and I am seeing it show up in meeting requests so you have definitely had some impact.

Here’s a personal testimonial for you. I used one of the ideas generated in the morning very successfully at a client meeting that afternoon.’

Brett Jackson, Managing Director, Qais Consulting, Singapore

In just a brief introduction to Speed Thinking, my team responded immediately to an approach that they could see was genuinely different and immediately useful.

After one hour we had several good new ideas to help solve an intractable problem we had been stuggling with for some time.
It’s easy to be cynical about ‘new’ management techniques, but this is no gimmick. Dr Ken Hudson’s speed thinking approach is both effective and an engaging team building activity.

Ben Holgate, Head of Brands and Marketing Services, IDP Education Pty Ltd.

Thank you so much for the invite. I learnt so much in 120 seconds!!! Certainly has opened my eyes even further, having just finished the book "Blink", all about thin slicing.

Definitely a learning tool (speed thinking) we should be investigating further for our sales teams here at Dell.

Speed thinking aligned with the speed of Dell could be rocket fuel!!! All before 9am everyday .

Thanks again,
Christopher, Dell

Hi Helen,
I just wanted to let you know about an outstanding  training program Damian and I went to this morning with Dr Ken Hudson.

As I may have already mentioned to you, Ken has a PhD in Organisational Creativity and has just published a second book entitled The Idea Accelerator. This book follows on from his successful first book Idea Generator.

Ken spent the first 15 years of his career as very creative and successful marketer at American Express and Citibank, as well as strategy planner. He also has lectured for several years at UTS on Creative marketing and was regularly voted by students as the best lecturer in the faculty.

He most recently has been consulting to many blue chips on innovation.

However, he has created Speed Thinking as a resource to help anybody or team to unlock creativity and solve problems.
Agency people will love it and will be able to apply it to their jobs and with clients.
Enough, he’s a bloody genius but fortunately his manner and modesty means everyone is engaged, energised and enlightened by his work.

Do yourself and Spur a favour and experience a workshop.

Regards,
Iain, Managing Partner, Proto Partners

Dear Ken,
I would love to receive the first six tools from your new book as I just loved the Idea Generator and reflect back on it often. Thanks for taking the time to write these books so the rest of us can just adopt your great ideas!

Kind regards,
Wendy Prowse, Calvary Health Care ACT

Two of my friends in the class started out very frustrated by the idea of Speed Thinking, only able to generate a small number of ideas at the beginning of the semester. However through constant reputation of Speed Thinking techniques in class, these same people were often developing more ideas than i was able to generate during the two  minute segment allocated.’
